After more than 70 years of professional practice and 46 years as a professor of the First Course in Commercial Law at the Escuela Libre de Derecho –without receiving any salary, as is the tradition of the School– Don Manuel Lizardi received a well-deserved tribute at a ceremony held in his honor on July 8, 2010 at the Club de Industriales in Mexico City. Don Manuel Lizardi is only the third attorney in the history of Mexico to receive the degree of Professor Emeritus of the Escuela Libre de Derecho, a recognition granted to him for his “exemplary and brilliant teaching career.” After nearly 100 years of history and having hosted in its classrooms, as professors and students, two presidents of Mexico, justices of the Supreme Court of Justice, and some of the most distinguished trial lawyers and notaries of the Mexican bar, the Escuela Libre de Derecho has conferred this highest distinction on only three attorneys: Don Manuel Herrera y Lasso, Don Gustavo R. Velasco, and now Don Manuel Lizardi, who, unlike his predecessors, never held an administrative position at the School. Von Wobeser y Sierra is filled with pride at this new recognition of Don Manuel Lizardi, just a few years after the Barra Mexicana, Colegio de Abogados, conferred upon Don Manuel the National Jurisprudence Award, the highest distinction that said Bar grants to its members. At the same ceremony, the book “Estudio de la Ley General de Sociedades Mercantiles y Comentarios a sus Artículos,” a work by Don Manuel Lizardi published and distributed in Mexico by Editorial Porrúa, was presented. This work, unique in Mexico, combines the experience and knowledge acquired by Don Manuel over 46 years of teaching and 70 years of professional practice.
