Today, after months of struggle between the private sector and the federal government, the new Official Mexican Standard NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010, General labeling specifications for pre-packaged food and non-alcoholic beverages-commercial and health information, was published in the Official Federal Gazette and will enter into force in stages between October 1, 2020 and October 1, 2025.
This modification requires substituting the current front label with stamps or logos in black and white, with the indications of “High in Calories”, “High in Sugar”, “High in Saturated Fats”, “High in Trans Fats” and “High in Sodium” and captions such as “Contains sweeteners, not recommended for children” and “Contains caffeine, not recommended for children”.
These stamps or logos must be included beginning on October 1, 2020 and their inclusion will be determined in function of the quantity of those nutrients for each 100 grams or 100 milliliters of product. According to the NOM, the maximum quantity of each nutrient that determines if the stamp or logo applies will be established incrementally during the period until the last one which will enter into force on October 1, 2025.
