Mexico eliminates certain tariff preferences under NAFTA and increases tariffs on various products

By executive order published today, Mexico proceeded to deny tariff preference under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and impose retaliatory tariffs on various products originating from the United States of America (U.S.).

Mexico announces imposition of retaliatory tariffs on various products originating from the USA

Through an official communiqué, the Mexican government announced that it will increase tariffs on products originating from the United States of America (USA), including flat steel (hot and cold sheet, including coated and various pipes), lamps, pork shanks and shoulders, sausages and food preparations, apples, grapes, blueberries and cheeses.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

Mexico approves the “Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership”

On May 23rd, 2018, the “Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership”, better known as TPP-11 or CPTPP, was published in the Official Federal Gazette, as well as two Side Agreements to the TPP-11 signed by Mexico with Vietnam related to the textile sector; a Side Agreement signed with Malaysia with respect to the rule of origin that will apply in the production of certain vehicles; and a Side Agreement with Australia regarding investment protection.

Signing of the “Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership”
March, 2018

Today, March 8th, 2018, the “Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific partnership”, better known as TPP-11 or CPTPP, was signed in Chile, with the participation of Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Japan, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam and Mexico. The agreement is signed just as the government of the United States is announcing that it will impose tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum.

Approval of the Mexican Fintech Act
March, 2018

On March 1st, 2018, the Chamber of Deputies approved a Decree (“Decree”) issuing the Financial Technology Institutions Act and amending and repealing various provisions of the Credit Institutions Act, the Securities Market Act and other related regulations ("Act" or "FinTech Act").. In accordance with said Decree, the FinTech Act has been sent to the Federal Executive for its promulgation and publication in the Federal Official Gazette.
